What's A Beta Account?

Just curious... I happen to pass by this blog and I notice this is a Beta account. Can anyone tell me what is a beta account? How is it different from registered and patron accounts?

Beta accounts were people who signed up during the first few months of Tabulas. They were also granted out as gifts to people who helped out with the Tabulas community as gifts from me. They are permanent patron accounts.
